The word UP

The wordUPin English has more meanings than any other two-letter word. It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].
It's easy to understandUP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wakeUP?


At a meeting, why does a topic comeUP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officersUPfor election and why is itUPto the secretary to writeUPa report? We callUPour friends, brightenUPa room, polishUPthe silver, warmUPthe leftovers and cleanUPthe kitchen. We lockUPthe house and fixUPthe old car.


At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stirUPtrouble, lineUPfor tickets, workUPan appetite, and thinkUPexcuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UPis special.


And thisUPis confusing: A drain must be openedUP because it is stoppedUP.


We openUP a store in the morning but we close itUPat night. We seem to be pretty mixed UPabout UP!

Charles Dicken's bicentenary of birth

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English  author, who wrote numerous highly acclaimed novels, including his autobiographical David Copperfield and also The Adventures of Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Hard Times, among many others. He is generally considered the greatest of the Victorian period. The Guardian is opening a year-long celebration of the bicentenary of his birth, by offering a guide in words and pictures to some of the most vivid characters created by Dickens.
